America Reads (AR)
Critical Service
The America Reads Challenge Program is a federally funded national literacy initiative. The Rice chapter of America Reads is overseen by the Center for Civic Leadership as a LEARN level Program. The program provides Rice students who are Financial Aid Work Study eligible an opportunity to earn $15/hour tutoring school students in the Houston community.
Houston Policy Challenge (HPC)
Policy & Governance
Want to learn about a local issue and how policy can address it? Work with other students to design a community-focused solution to a policy problem in Houston. Participants tackle a different issue each year and their proposals are judged by a panel of local leaders and experts.
Moody Civic Immersion
Critical Service
The Civic Immersion program is a flexible, service-learning opportunity that aims to introduce incoming students to the city of Houston and other members of the Rice community! The hybrid program will cover social issues relevant to the Houston area and enable participants to learn from and work both in-person and remotely with local organizations that are striving to create positive, sustainable change. Students will be able to connect with incoming peers, begin to build community in their soon-to-be home, and learn about opportunities that will be available to them through the CCL and beyond.
