The Civic Immersion program is a service-learning opportunity that aims to introduce incoming students to the city of Houston and other members of the Rice community, including upperclassmen, faculty/staff, and each other! This program is offered in two different modalities, an in-person week and a virtual week This allows us to provide an in-person and virtual experience for students from a diverse range of backgrounds and geographical locations to meet and build community. Students participating in person will live and learn as cohorts together in Houston for the week, while students participating during the virtual week will be virtually immersed in similar programs and activities. Civic Immersion is led by current Rice students eager to help new students learn from community organizations, collaborate on projects to assist them and engage in group and individual reflections. Students will be able to connect with incoming peers, begin to build community in their soon-to-be home, and learn about opportunities that will be available to them through the CCL and beyond!
In the summer of 2021, over 240 incoming students participated in the completely remote version of this program! Participants were able to connect with Houston-area community partners covering a wide range of social issues affecting our communities.
Dates held:
July 10-15th: In-Person This session will be held in-person in Houston.
July 17-22nd: Remote This session will be completely virtual over Zoom.
