Civic Owlets

Open to ALL incoming students, including first years and transfer students. No prior knowledge or experience with civic engagement or service-learning is necessary.

In the summer of 2021, over 240 incoming students participated in the virtual version of the Urban Immersion program known as Civic Owlets! Participants were able to connect with Houston-area community partners covering a wide range of social issues affecting our communities. These partners included Black Lives Matter Houston, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, Mi Familia Vota, and many more.

2021 topics included:

Anti-Racism

Labor Rights

Housing Access

Health Equity

Democratic Inclusion

The Civic Owlets program is a flexible and remote service-learning opportunity that aims to introduce incoming students to the city of Houston and other members of the Rice community, including upperclassmen, faculty/staff, and each other! The program, conducted entirely online, will cover social issues relevant to the Houston area and enable participants to learn from and work remotely with local organizations that are striving to create positive, sustainable change. Students will be able to connect with incoming peers, begin to build community in their soon-to-be home, and learn about opportunities that will be available to them through the CCL and beyond.
