Certificate Requirements

The Certificate in Civic Leadership is a means of helping bring intentionality, advice, and support to students' progress through a wide variety of integrated academic and community-based leadership, research, and service activities. Ultimately, completion of the certificate represents that a student has developed core competencies that prepare them to exercise leadership in a variety of roles as an active citizen.

Requirements :

  • One 3-credit leadership course.
    • Course lists can be found a ccl.rice.edu under “Certificate in Civic Leadership” and “Elective Courses.”
  • One 3-credit social issue course.
    • Course lists can be found a ccl.rice.edu under “Certificate in Civic Leadership” and “Elective Courses.”
  • One CCL immersion program (LEARN level).
    • Urban Immersion Participant
    • Alternative Spring Break Participant
    • Alternative Break Participant
    • CCL Volunteers
    • America Reads
    • Global Engagement Opportunity
    • Houston Policy Challenge Participant
  • One CCL action program (ACT level).
    • Alternative Spring Break Site Leader
    • Loewenstern Fellowship 
    • Leadership Rice Mentorship Experience
    • Houston Action Research Teams
    • Urban Immersion Student Leader
    • Houston Policy Challenge Coordinators
    • Rich Family Endowment Fellows
  • Civic Leadership Capstone course (Fall & Spring 3 credit courses).
  • Completed portfolio with application and reflections.

Timeline :

  • Capstone projects may be completed either Junior or Senior year.
  • Must declare intent to pursue certificate in the spring semester prior to starting the Capstone course (email certificate advisor to set up a meeting in order to declare)
  • Formal application to the certificate program due in August prior to the start of Capstone.
