Hi y’all! My name is Sharon, but most people call me Shay. I’m majoring in Political Science and Social Policy Analysis on the pre-law track. This past year, I had my first experience with the Center for Civic Leadership (CCL) through the Loewenstern Fellowship, where I spent an unforgettable summer in São Paulo, Brazil—completely funded! I worked with Soweto Organização Negra, a sociopolitical organization dedicated to defending the rights of Brazil’s Black population and strengthening the unity of the Black diaspora.
The fellowship was an immersive experience where my community partners made sure we were fully integrated into Afro-Brazilian culture. I had the chance to engage with various political organizations, attend community events, explore museums, and so much more. What made the experience even more enriching was the opportunity to travel beyond São Paulo. I visited Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, Macaé, and Santos, experiencing the diversity of Brazil’s regions and cultures.
As a first-generation, low-income student who came to Rice through QuestBridge, spending a whole summer abroad seemed unfathomable. But thanks to the Loewenstern Fellowship, it became a reality, and I’m beyond grateful for the experience. I highly encourage any FGLI students to consider applying—you won’t regret it! I'm deeply passionate about empowering FGLI students to realize that they are more than capable of participating in opportunities like the Loewenstern Fellowship, along with the many other fellowships and programs offered by the CCL!
