Last month, the CCL partnered with the Taiwanese Culture Center in Houston to deliver leadership development for high school students.
The culture center hosted a two-day training for new members of the Formosa Association of Student Cultural Ambassadors (FASCA) program. Nearly 80 students from Dallas, Austin, and Houston gathered at the cultural center in Southwest Houston to discuss their Taiwanese heritage, ways to serve their communities, and what it means to be a civic leader.
Kelsey Ullom, Associate Director at the CCL and Fulbright recipient to Taiwan, facilitated a 90-minute leadership development workshop, alongside seven Rice undergraduate student assistants. During the workshop, FASCA students reflected on their values and diverse strengths they see in themselves and other leaders in their life. The participants heard from Rice students who shared their leadership journey and how they have grown as a leader with the support of the CCL. The students then broke into small groups, where they created personal mission statements to guide their upcoming role as cultural ambassadors for Taiwan.
Upon completing the training, FASCA students presented what they learned to an audience of parents and families. They then received certificates from Taiwanese officials, such as Yvonne Hsiao, the director general of the Taiwan Economic and Cultural Office in Houston (TECO).
