Hey there! I’m Sean Nyangeri, and I am a current senior at McMurtry. My civic journey with the CCL began the summer after my sophomore year as a Moody Global Fellow. With the Moody Global Fellows program, I was granted funding to plan a two-week experience in Costa Rica aligned with my interests, learning how to incorporate international experiences into my future aspirations. After my positive experience with that program, I was motivated to continue my civic journey with the Loewenstern Fellowship the following summer after my junior year. As a Loewenstern Fellow, I was able to intern in São Paulo, Brazil, with Soweto Organização Negra, a sociopolitical collective dedicated to activism and fighting for the rights and well-being of Black Brazilians. This experience really allowed me to fully immerse myself in Afro-Brazilian culture and the Black Brazilian social movement, learning how truly connected the African diaspora is globally and understanding new facets of activism & community-building that I can apply here in the US. Now, being a senior applying to gap-year fellowships also through the CCL, the CCL has really had such a profound impact on me, as well as how I see myself 5, 10 years from now, and the kind of impact I want to have. Through being a CCL ambassador, I want to help other Rice students begin their civic journeys and take advantage of the CCL’s various amazing opportunities. If you have any questions (literally any) or want to hear more about the CCL, please don’t hesitate to reach out at sn68@rice.edu <333333
