Hi everyone! My name is Rosa Sabel, and I’m a senior at Wiess studying environmental science. I first got involved with the CCL through Civic Immersion before I even matriculated, and I loved both learning about Houston social issues and meeting other students interested in civic engagement. My experience inspired my goal to get involved in as many CCL opportunities as possible throughout my time at Rice, and I would say I’ve been pretty successful so far. I participated in ASBs both my freshmen and sophomore year, both of which focused on environmental justice topics, and I loved the opportunity to dive more deeply into specific topics I was particularly passionate about. I’ve also been very involved with the CCL’s community-based research opportunities. I worked on a research project focused on nature based solutions during my sophomore summer through the Gulf Scholars Program (GSP), and went on to co-teach and lead GSP the following year. I also worked on a different nature-based solutions project in collaboration with the Harris County Flood Control District through the HART program last spring. Finally, I had the incredible opportunity to work with a Mexico-based nonprofit on clean water access through the Loewenstern fellowship this past summer. All of my CCL experiences have given me the opportunity to connect with so many wonderful people—students, faculty, staff, and community members—and I would love to help other students find their own path to getting involved too. I’m always down to talk through the different program options available and help you figure out what is best for you. Please feel free to contact me anytime at rs186@rice.edu — I’m excited to meet you!
