The Abraham-Broad Exchange Program provides the opportunity to study abroad for an academic year in the UK. The program supports an exchange between students at Rice University and Trinity College, University of Cambridge. The exchange is meant to support a student pursuing a course of study and experiences not otherwise available to them at Rice. The fellowship is especially appreciative of the ambassadorial qualities of the applicant both in representing Rice at Trinity and in sharing enthusiasm for Cambridge upon return to Rice.

The Amici di Via Gabina grants a summer traveling stipend for a student (undergraduate or graduate, including 5th year students) to provide a transformational opportunity in the study of architecture, art, history, archeology, language, music and culture. This award honors Dr. Walter Widrig and Dr. Philip Oliver-Smith, whose leadership in the Via Gabina excavation project for 14 years gave students opportunities to participate in their own transformational experiences.

The Barry Goldwater Scholarship provides a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue careers in these fields. It is expected that all recipients will pursue graduate work in their respective field of study.

The Beinecke Scholarship offers funding for graduate school in the Humanities and Social Sciences. Scholars receive a total of $34,000 to attend graduate school. Applicants must demonstrate both financial need and a record of scholastic achievement, intellectual ability, and personal promise.

Boren Scholarships & Fellowships support intensive study of a foreign language that is deemed critical to U.S. national security. Recipients agree to a year of public service with the federal government upon their return from language study abroad. The Arthur and Shelley Gottschalk Traveling Grant for Musicians will award up to $3000 to one music student, currently enrolled in Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music at the time of making the application, and for a time no longer than one year from the date of notification of the award. The purpose of the grant is to enable travel by the student. However, travel is not to be used for purpose of taking lessons, attending festivals, or attending classes. Rather, this travel is to encourage the creative development of the student by engaging with places and opportunities outside the academic norm. The grant will be awarded to the proposal that strikes the jury as the most intriguing and unique, as well as possible under the fiscal limits of the grant.

The Leebron Smyth Award, offers up to $5000 for a foreign language study abroad for 400-500 level language or introductory courses for courses not taught at Rice OR a LCTL (less commonly taught language, as defined by the Rice Center for Languages and Intercultural Communication). The Udall Undergraduate Scholarship provides undergraduate funding for students who are committed to environmental issues. Applicants must have demonstrated leadership in work related to the environment, whether in policy, engineering, science, education, urban planning and renewal, business, health, justice, economics, or another field. Udall also awards scholarships to Native American and Alaskan Native students who plan to pursue careers in public and community health care, tribal government, and public policy affecting Native American communities.

The Truman Scholarship is an award offered to undergraduate students to pursue graduate school in preparation for a career in public service. The Truman Foundation seeks to identify candidates who have demonstrated academic excellence, leadership potential, and a commitment to public service.

The Wagoner Foreign Study Scholarship, founded by Rice alumnus James T. Wagoner ('29), provides students and alumni with the opportunity to conduct research abroad for a minimum of eight weeks and up to one year.

A research project may be combined simultaneously with the advanced study of a language (400 level or above), or an introductory level of languages not offered at Rice. Funding is available up to $20,000 per award (Note: funding is considered taxable income). The Wagoner only supports university enrollment when it is required to get a visa in the host country.

The Fulbright Study/Research Award is the traditional award opportunity where a candidate designs a proposal for a specific country. Read the Country Summaries for more information. Through the James C. Gaither Junior Fellows program, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace offers approximately 12-14 one-year fellowships to uniquely qualified graduating seniors and recent alumni.

The Thomas J. Watson Fellowship is a one-year grant for purposeful, independent exploration and travel outside the United States, awarded to graduating seniors to enhance their capacity for resourcefulness, imagination, openness, and leadership and to foster their humane and effective participation in the world community.

The Churchill Scholarship provides funding to American students for a year of Master’s study in science, mathematics, and engineering at the University of Cambridge.

The Fulbright Scholarship provides financial support for program study, research, or teaching in a single country. The Fulbright Study/Research Award is the traditional award opportunity where a candidate designs a proposal for a specific country. Read the Country Summaries for more information. Some countries (including the United Kingdom) offer funded graduate programs -- generally Masters degrees. Admission to the graduate program is a condition of the award and a separate application process.

The Marshall Scholarship finances young Americans of high ability to study for a graduate degree in the United Kingdom. The commission funding is government-supported and the Marshall supports study in any UK institution. There are partner institutions that provide some funding and additional support for Marshall Scholars. In general, they encourage applicants to look beyond OxBridge and to identify an excellent program of study from the Research Excellence Framework, and choose institutions that are aligned holistically with the candidate’s goals. Scholarships support 2 years (in some cases 1 and 3) of graduate study. Students identify 2 potential plans for programs (a combination of Masters, DPhil, institutions, etc.).

Please note: there is a 1-year and 2-year award application. The 1-year award option should be used only if there is a specific limitation to time available to do the Marshall program (see additional information in notes from Marshall below). Strong preference is for the 2-year commitment.

The Michel David-Weill Scholarship covers the cost of tuition and living expenses for a two-year master’s program at Sciences Po in Paris. The scholarship is awarded each year to one American student who exemplifies the core values embodied by Michel David-Weill: academic excellence, leadership, multiculturalism, tolerance, and high achievement.

The Rhodes Scholarship allows students to pursue postgraduate study at the University of Oxford. Rhodes Scholars are chosen for their outstanding scholarly achievements, their character, commitment to others and to the common good, and for their potential for leadership in whatever domains their careers may lead.

The Yenching Academy of Peking University offers students an interdisciplinary Master’s program in China Studies for outstanding graduates from all over the globe.
