The Rice University Alternative Spring Break (ASB) program empowers Rice students to engage with new communities through education, service, and advocacy. Students gain awareness through in-depth education around one social justice issue, as well as learning about civic leadership concepts such as active citizenship, asset-based community development, intersectionality, privilege/oppression, and allyship. Participants will have a chance to reflect as both individuals and as a group on their identities in relation to the world around them.
Dates Held: Weekly meetings held November - April with immersion trip occuring March 9 - March 17, 2019. Periodic All-ASB events will also be required of participants.
Funding: Financial aid is available for student trip costs and is NOT a factor considered in the application and selection process. The CCL follows a need-blind policy for all application processes. Participants are responsible for raising funds to cover their registration fees, unless awarded a financial aid scholarship. The cost is $150 for trips driving from or taking place in Houston and $350 for trips that will require a flight. The CCL offers two forms of need-based financial aid to help students subsidize costs - a payment plan option and financial scholarships. CCL staff determine awards in collaboration with the Financial Aid Office. In order to maintain confidentiality, site leaders will not have information about who applies for or is awarded financial aid. Students can opt to be considered for financial aid on the supplemental application required for applying to ASB.
