Please apply hereWe are currently accepting applications for Spring 2017!

The America Reads Challenge Program is a federally funded national literacy initiative. The Rice chapter of America Reads is overseen by the Center for Civic Leadership.

Rice students have the paid opportunity ($15/hour) to work with community organizations and schools in Houston by helping children complete their schoolwork, get a jumpstart on curriculum, and become engaged with the learning process. Tutors receive training and placements through the CCL.

Rice students must be Financial Aid Work Study eligible in order to participate. Please note students can hold only one FWS position at a time.

Tutoring sites are off-campus. While access to a car is convenient, some locations are accessible by public transportation. Students are compensated for travel time to and from the sites.

This is an excellent opportunity for students who:

  • Enjoy working with children
  • Want to be engaged with their community
  • Would like field experience in education
  • Can work at least 3 hours per week (20 hours max)

Current tutoring placements include:
