Faculty play a critical role in supporting engaged research and service wiith communities locally, domestically, and internationally through our programs and partnerships. Rice faculty members have collaborated with the Center for Civic Leadership in the following capacities:
Advising and mentoring opportunities:
- Academic Fairs: Discover Research (Fall) and the Summer Research Fair (Spring) hosted by the CCL allow students to become acquainted with research at Rice, and to discuss research opportunities with faculty across disciplines.
- Alternative Spring Break: Faculty learning partner workshops.
- Capstone projects: Students pursuing the Certificate in Civic Leadership choose a faculty advisor. In order to earn the Certificate, students must complete UNIV 402 and UNIV 403. As part of UNIV 402, students draft community-based project proposals that are approved by the student's chosen faculty advisor, as well as CCL staff and the associated community partner. UNIV 403 is an independent course that requires students to implement their projects under the supervision of their faculty advisor. Century Scholars: Incoming Rice freshmen have the opportunity to work closely with a faculty mentor and actively engage in the mentor's research over a two year period. The CCL matches select students with faculty members whose research aligns with their interest. Students are expected to dedicate 6-10 hours a week to research.
- Faculty Fellowships Committee: The list of faculty currently on this committee may be found here.
- Houston Action Research Team (HART): HARTs are small, interdisciplinary teams of Rice students that work together with city offices and community organizations to to develop creative responses to complex civic questions and community challenges. Student teams are co-advised by Rice faculty and CCL staff, and each HART is assisted by a graduate student team coach. Faculty are invited to reach out to the CCL regarding potential projects as well as interest in team advising. HART project topics and academic approaches are diverse, and advising opportunities are open to faculty from all academic schools. Previous HARTs have been advised by Rice faculty in Humanities, Social Sciences, and Engineering.
- LEAD courses: The CCL offers courses under LEAD and UNIV designations. Our department also keeps track of civic research and design courses that integrate experiential learning components.
- Loewenstern Fellowship: Loewenstern Fellows seek out a faculty advisor to gain insights about the social issue or geographic area in which they will be conducting service. Fellows meet with their faculty advisor at least one time before their trip and once after to inform and share their service and research
Serving on a panel/academic judging opportunities:
- Houston Air Quality Event: Fall 2015 symposium on air quality in Houston with Professor Loren Raun and Professor Kathy Ensor.
- Rice Undergraduate Research Symposium (RURS): Faculty are invited to evaluate and give feedback on poster or oral presentations of undergraduate students presenting research, design, or creative work at the Rice Undergraduate Research Symposium.
- Rice University Faculty Committee on Fellowships and Awards
